During the end of the year, we have much to attend to, especially at Christmas. Yet however we reflect upon the occasion, we must also spare a thought for those who may be seeking comfort and safety.
Consequently, Boroondara Council is again joining forces with You Matter as a part of the annual Book Giving Tree, a venture that has been operating in conjunction with Boroondara libraries since 2021.
Until Monday 15 December members of the community are encouraged to visit a bookstore within the municipality and obtain a new book to donate to one of the specified drop-off points.
Cr Sophie Torney, Mayor of Boroondara, said “With a Giving Tree in every one of our libraries, it’s easy to make a real impact. This simple act shows vulnerable members of our community that they are seen, and they are valued.”
You Matter has been involved with the Council for three years. This voluntary organisation assists women and children bearing the hardship associated with family violence through supplying and setting up contents of their longer-term accommodation, through their ‘Havens of hope’ program. 
Deborah de Rossi, CEO of You Matter, said “Our roots in Boroondara run deep. This partnership is critical: it strengthens our ability to create safe, furnished homes for women and children recovering from family violence, and it means that the community we serve genuinely supports, knows and champions us.”
In addition to offering a beacon of light for those enduring this form of grievance, books have the capacity to be a passage for progress as well. As a result, they allow for children, young adults and women to move a step closer towards achieving their own sense of wellbeing.
Cr Sophie Torney said “The Book Giving Tree is a staple of the festive season in Boroondara, and I encourage everyone to get involved by donating a book for a mother or child who has been impacted by domestic or family violence.”
