Here Comes the Bride

Over the last few months, the Canterbury History Group and the Surrey Hills Historical Society have been researching the social history of weddings, the traditions behind them and the changes that can be seen over time. Why the white dress? And why were orange blossoms so commonly used in bouquets, buttonholes and bridal coronets?

Traditionally, and continuing in some cultures, marriage reflected class and inheritance, with partners often chosen by family. Today in Boroondara and more broadly, weddings still celebrate the marriage of two people and the joining of their families; they demonstrate love and are a time for the couple to celebrate with family and friends and to publicly state their commitment to each other.

This exhibition draws upon material held in our collections and within the local community. It includes dresses from the late 1890’s up until today, over 50 wedding photos, memorabilia including accessories, cards and wedding invitations, over 1000 local marriage announcements and newspaper reports, and individuals’ stories.
