DESCRIPTION:Platypus spotting on the Yarra\nSaturday 19 September\, 4.30pm to 6.30pm \nWombat Bend\, Templestowe \nThe Eastern Rosellas community group of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) is once again hosting a platypus spotting event on Saturday the 19 September from 4:30 to 6:30pm at Wombat Bend in Templestowe Lower. Everyone is welcome. \nThis event is part of the Platy Project\, a joint citizen science campaign of the ACF and the University of NSW. The aim of the project is to assist in mapping platypus habitat\, over time\, across Eastern and Southern Australia. \nIf you are able to be there on September 19\, we’ll guide you to the University of NSW platypus recording site on your phone\, and ask you to pick a comfortable and safe spot along the river bank or on the swing bridge\, and watch. The platypus is nocturnal\, and it starts to forage towards dusk\, earlier on cloudy days. They usually dive for about 30 seconds and surface for 10-15 seconds at a time\, so you need a bit of patience and persistence to see them. But it is restful to sit quietly by a river at sunset\, watching the water and listening to the birds. And it’s a memorable experience if you see a platypus\, especially for the first time and especially for the kids. \nPlease join us in this project if you’re interested and free that day. This is a free event and the first in this year’s Whitehorse Heritage Week Program that will run from Sunday 13 to Sunday 20 September. \nOld fashioned children’s games and picnic races will be held in the Schwerkolt Cottage garden together with kids’ craft activities. The Whitehorse Square Dancing Club will be providing demonstrations during the day with the opportunity for visitors to join in. You can also try your hand at Chinese Brush Painting\, bobbin lace making\, basket making\, pottery and spinning and weaving. \nOur wonderful blacksmith\, Gunther\, will again be firing up the original forge to demonstrate his skills and the Hand Tools Preservation Society of Australia will be showing how heritage tools were used. \nBrumbies Bush Band will get your feet tapping and there will be the opportunity for all ages to get up and dance. Animals on the Move will again be giving children the opportunity to ‘get up close’ to farm animals and a giant bubble artist will amaze the crowds. \nA special attraction this year will be Jack Briscoe of Futura Kelpies with his ‘Working Dogs Show’ where his team of extra talented dogs will demonstrate special sheep herding skills. \nYes\, there is food\, and EFTPOS is available! \nTake a break from the activities to enjoy a delicious Devonshire tea provided by the Whitehorse Historical Society served from the Local History Room or enjoy a sausage from the Lions and Rotary Club Sausage Sizzle. Formed in Adelaide in 1995\, Seraphim have established themselves as one of Australia’s most celebrated and versatile ensembles\, and in 2019 were awarded an Aria award for Best Classical Album for the recording Thirteen ways to Look at Birds. \nThe trio are renowned for their flagship concert series and recordings\, regional touring and educational workshops.
